VISA Power faces court case for felling trees
February 21st, 2011 - 8:05 pm ICT by IANSRaipur, Feb 21 (IANS) VISA Power Limited (VPL), part of the Rs.5,000 crore VISA Group, is facing a court case in Chhattisgarh for felling trees illegally at a site where it has planned a thermal power project, Environment Minister Rajesh Munat told the state assembly Monday.”There are a total of seven offences registered against VISA Power in the court in Raigarh district for felling trees without taking required permission,” Munat said. He added that during the on-spot inspection, the government officials found 40 trees were illegally cut by the company.
The minister said the revenue department has seized all the trees that were illegally cut down and further action is being taken against the company for violating the environmental norms.
The issue figured in the assembly when senior Congress member Shakrajit Nayak alleged that VISA Power has been involved in illegal felling of more than 300 trees for its proposed 1,200 MW coal-based power plant that will come up near Deveri and Dumarpali in Raigarh.
