Uttar Pradesh weather department goes high-tech
December 30th, 2011 - 12:01 am ICT by IANSLucknow, Dec 29 (IANS) The meteorological office of Uttar Pradesh has gone high tech with the commissioning of its much awaited Doppler weather radar, an official said Thursday.
“The new radar system will enable us to ensure greater accuracy in assessing and predicting weather conditions,” state Met Office director J.P. Gupta told IANS here.
“The equipment installed at a cost of Rs.13 crore would go a long way in facilitating the agricultural sector,” he said. “It would also enable us to provide more accurate information to air, rail and road traffic, particularly during adverse weather conditions.”
According to Gupta, the new equipment will enable the department to ascertain cloud formation, quantity of rainfall, wind speed and even visibility conditions, which is a determining factor for a smooth movement of flights and trains.
The DWR works on the principle of Doppler effect, which envisages receiving and interpreting electromagnetic waves from a moving object. DWR has a range of 450 to 500 km. The predictions, therefore, can be made for a wide range provided there are no obstructions.
