Washington, July 20 (IANS) A bedridden elderly man and his granddaughter died after a bolt of lightning struck their house and started a fire in Louisville city in the US, CNN reported Friday.

Officials said the lightning came from powerful storms that struck the area Thursday evening, and caused many vehicle accidents. Storms knocked out power in thousands of homes across Kentucky state.

An emergency call from people inside the house came to firefighters, who were immediately sent to the scene.

They found the elderly man was bedridden and his granddaughter was trying to get him out of the house. At least 30 firefighters present at the spot helped pull the two people out.

The man died of his injuries at the scene, and the woman was declared dead at a hospital.

Firefighters said lightning struck an 80-foot-tall tree, and entered a phone wire that came in through the rear of the house.
