Twenty quintal fish found dead in Uttar PradeshJune 3rd, 2008 - 4:44 pm ICT by IANS
Lucknow, June 3 (IANS) Over 20 quintals of fish were found dead in the Sai river in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district possibly due to industrial pollutants, a police official said Tuesday. “Prima facie, it appears that the fish died of industrial effluents discharged in the river. We have sought assistance from Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) officials to ascertain the exact reason behind the incident,” police officer N.K. Singh told IANS.
He added that the fish died in Rae Bareli district, 150 km from here, and came to Pratapgrah, 80 km from here, carried along by the flow of the river.
Many paper units in Rae Bareli district discharge toxic effluents into the river.
