Kolkata, Feb 22 (IANS) A 42-year-old man, riding a bicycle to work, was trampled to death by an elephant in West Bengal’s Bankura district Tuesday morning, police said. Ritu Lal Yadav was on his way to work at a private coal mine when a herd of elephants from the nearby Barjora forest suddenly crossed the road.

A tusker from the herd pulled Yadav away from the cycle and trampled upon him, said Bankura Police Superintendent Pranav Kumar.

“Yadav died on the spot. He hailed from Giridih in Jharkhand and used to live near Barjora after joining the coal mine as a drill operator,” said Kumar.

“A herd of 14 elephants is now residing in the Satjhora and Ghatgoria forest areas. We are looking into the incident so that the victim’s family gets compensation at the earliest,” Bankura Forest Divisional Officer Kuliyan Devial said.
