MIAMI (BNO NEWS) – Tropical Storm Olaf formed in the Eastern Pacific on Thursday afternoon, becoming the fifteenth tropical storm of the 2009 Pacific hurricane season, forecasters said.

Olaf formed just before 2 p.m. PDT when the center of the storm was located about 575 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico.

Olaf is moving toward the west-northwest at a speed of 6 miles per hour, and a turn toward the northwest is expected later on Thursday or on Friday. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 miles per hour, with higher gusts. A little additional strengthening is forecast for Thursday, but the storm will then start to weaken.

The storm is posing no threat to land.

The Pacific hurricane season started on May 15, and will officially end on November 30.
