Nicaragua, Nov. 5 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The tropical storm Ida wreaked havoc in the Nicaraguan islands of the Caribbean. It was reported as forming early on Wednesday, and made a landfall on Nicaragua early on Thursday morning. It is the ninth storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. It was reported to be located at the southern part of the Caribbean, near the island of Nicaragua. The area experienced heavy rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the day caused by the storm. The storm also produced wind at the speed of about 57 miles per hour.
The storm was threatening to turn into a hurricane before it crashed on Nicaragua. It had gained strength at the southern part of Nicaragua. It was expected by meteorologists that it would cross Nicaragua and Honduras, but they had predicted that it might crash on land. There was no chance that the storm would not be able to gather strength as conditions were optimal: low winds, warm sea and a moisture laden atmosphere. The storm was concentrated mostly near Bluefields and was moving toward the northwest at a speed of 6 mph.
Before the storm broke out on the Nicaraguan islands, it had caused heavy rainfall and high winds in the area. The popular tourist spot of the Corn Islands was among the first to be hit. As the storm crashed, it uprooted trees and phone lines. Electric lines were also uprooted. The island got almost totally disconnected from the nearest cities as almost all forms of communication went down. Telephone and cellphone services were not available and radio communication was scratchy. About 300 people had to be evacuated from their poorly constructed homes. The incident was not termed a catastrophe.
