Tornados hit US’ South & Midwest

Washington, Jan 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) At least two people are dead as storms battered US’ South and Midwest. Some states have issued tornado alerts to warn citizens of the storm.

The two people confirmed dead were killed in the Birmingham, Ala., area. The police say a 16-year-old girl was killed in Clay with the other victim, an 82-year-old man killed in Oak Grove. Several injuries have been reported following the storm which struck around 3:30 am.

A spokeswoman for the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, Yasamie Richardson, informed reporters that, “Some roads are impassable, there are a number of county roads where you have either debris down, trees down, damage from homes,”

Rescue workers have descended on the affected areas with chain saws and excavators to clear the debris and the road. Emergency workers were busy going from door to door to rescue people who may have been trapped indoors by falling trees.

Meteorologists say tornados might have struck certain places. The storm come almost a year deadly storm in Alabama left at least 240 people dead. Tuscaloosa came off worse with about 50 people killed in the town. Coincidentally, the state had planned a meeting in Montgomery to discuss the state’s readiness for a storm on Monday. The meeting has been rescheduled.
