New York, June 5 (THAINDIAN NEWS) World Environment Day (WED) will be observed today all over the world. Run by the UNEP (UN’s Environment Programme), the aim of this event is to increase public awareness among the world’s population for the global environmental concerns to take positive action to save the environment and reduce and minimize its degradation.

This annual event takes place every 5th June since 1973. This year’s event will celebrate its 40th anniversary as the UN General Assembly first established it in 1972, marking the start of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

Human beings are sharing a common planet, and numerous environmental issues such as climate change, acid rain, and other threats to the environment affect community health in a very dramatic way.

A number of experts have used today’s celebration to remind the public that they play a very significant role in helping towards the reduction of the environments degradation, and to remember that these issues cannot be tackled independently by specific countries.

Numerous commentators have claimed that there is a need for a common voice and a set of shared values that preserve the environment and the health of the individuals coexisting in this planet.
