Tibetan exiles to attend meet on environment
November 22nd, 2009 - 2:10 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Dharamsala, Nov 22 (IANS) Tibetan exiles of India, Nepal and Bhutan will participate in a two-day conference on environment in Haryana from Monday, a spokesperson for the Tibetan government-in-exile said here Sunday.
The department of religion and culture of the Central Tibetan Administration has been organising the conference.
“Around 85 Buddhist monks, lamas and ‘tulkus’ (reincarnated lamas) from traditional monasteries in India, Nepal and Bhutan are participating in the conference on environment protection in Gurgaon from Nov 23,” said the spokesperson.
Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama would inaugurate the conference, he said.
Samdhong Rinpoche, the prime minister of the government-in-exile, and Sunder Lal Bahuguna, the noted environmentalist, would also address the conference on the opening day.
The Dalai Lama has been based in this Himachal Pradesh hill station since having fled Tibet along with several supporters in 1959. From here, he has ever since been heading the government-in-exile, which is not recognised by any country.
Nearly 100,000 Tibetan exiles live in India.
