Thousands suffer power outages in US after storms
June 13th, 2012 - 6:41 pm ICT by IANSWashington, June 13 ( IANS) Thousands of people in the US state of Texas went without electricity late Tuesday, after thunderstorms rolled through the Houston area knocking down trees and cutting off power supply to homes and businesses, Xinhua reported.
About 88,000 homes and businesses were reportedly without power in Houstan.
Local energy provider CenterPoint Energy reported that about 75,000 customers have snapped power supply. Another company reported over 13,000 outages.
Parts of Montgomery county and north Harris county in the area were among the areas hit hardest by the storms that started in the afternoon.
Fire officials had a tough time, handling multiple fires caused by lightning strikes and power lines damaged by falling trees and near hurricane-force winds, according to media reports.
