New Delhi, March 18 (IANS) Holi is still a few days away. But people in North India are already in a summer mood as temperature soared in several northern cities crossing the 35 degrees Celsius mark. Though Delhiites still enjoy pleasant mornings and cool nights, sudden rise in the maximum temperature has signalled the coming of a strong summer this time. The maximum temperature in the national capital touched 35.7 degrees Celsius, five degrees above what is the normal level during this time of the season.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 17.7 degrees Celsius, three degrees above the normal, indicating that the “comfortable” nights would soon disappear.

Orissa has also witnessed a sharp rise in mercury as the Sundergarh town recorded highest 39.9 degrees maximum temperature.

“The Sundergarh town in western Orissa recorded highest 39.9 degree maximum temperature,” an official of the Bhubaneswar meteorological office told IANS.

Though the northern plains started getting warmer, it is already raining in some parts of southern India and parts of northeastern states.

The Weather Office said Assam received 15.2 millimetre rainfall while Kerala got 4 millimetres of rain. It also forecast that West Bengal, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and coastal and south interior Karnataka would get thundershowers in the coming days.

The following were the maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall in major cities for the 24 hours till Tuesday morning, with figures in brackets denoting deviations from the average.
