Tar Balls Arrive At Pensacola Beach, Kill Dolphin

pensacolaJune 24, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Tar balls washed ashore the Pensacola beach on Wednesday and emergency workers found a an oil covered dolphin on the shores. This has been the worst impact of the BP oil spill so far in Florida.

The state emergency workers said that the thick layer of oil covered almost 5 km of the Pensacola Beach. Though a number of small tar balls washed ashore regularly on the beaches of Florida for the last couple of week, but on Wednesday large slicks of oil and tarry mats floated into the beach.

Governor Charlie Crist who visited the area said in a statement that though he had seen tar balls before, but never of this kind. Hundreds of workers have been employed to scoop up the oil with small shovels. There is also the pungent smell of the oil that can be now smelt far and wide in the area.

A visitor from New Orleans said that her friends went for a swim and came out covered in oil. Many tourists have been heart broken by the impact of the oil spill in one of America’s favourite beaches. Another local was on the verge of a break down talking about the beach which used to be pristine white and also a place where people could come and forget all their worries.

The oil covered dolphin was kept wet by the emergency workers till the animal decontamination team arrived. It however died on it way to the rehabilitation center.

The federal on-scene representative who is charge of the clean up operations said that it could take days to clean up the oil on the beach even if no tar balls more arrive. The tar balls on the other hand have been arriving continuously since Wednesday.
