Taps freeze in chilly Kashmir
January 11th, 2012 - 3:19 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Srinagar, Jan 11 (IANS) Water taps, lakes and other water bodies continued to freeze Wednesday as both the maximum and the minimum temperatures remained below zero degrees Celsius in this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital and other parts of the Valley.
“The maximum temperature was minus 1 degrees in Srinagar yesterday (Tuesday). The minimum was minus 3.3 degrees today (Wednesday),” said Abdul Rashid Zargar, assistant director at the meteorological office here.
“The minimum in Pahalgam was minus 10.7 degrees while it was minus 14.8 in Gulmarg. Leh (in Ladakh) was the coldest at minus 18.4 while the minimum temperature in Kargil town was minus 17.4 degrees,” he added.
Zargar said another western disturbance is approaching under whose influence light to moderate snowfall is expected across the Valley over the weekend.
Water taps in many residential areas of Srinagar remained frozen in the morning as people lit small fires around them to defreeze them. Most of the lakes and other water bodies in the Valley have frozen.
