Study: Eco-bulbs are a health hazard for babies & pregnant women
December 23rd, 2010 - 10:36 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Dec 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) There seems to be a new mankind-created problem. In trying to reduce the amount of harm the mankind’s dependence on energy has created for the environment, new efficient bulbs were introduced.
The new bulbs were hailed and several people quickly changed from the conventional onion bulbs and started plugging in on the new eco-bulbs.
However, a new study by the Fraunhofer Wilhelm Klauditz Institute revealed that these new bulbs contain mercury which can be harmful for babies and pregnant women. The researchers say that when these bulbs break, they release the mercury gas into the atmosphere and that is another environmental disaster.
A broken eco-bulb can release as much as 7 micrograms of mercury per cubic meter air which far exceeds the allowed 0.35 micrograms per cubic meter air.
The revelation has left many governments and agencies that were determined to get as many people as possible using the bulbs stunned. They have admitted that it is time that an alternative is found to the eco-bulb.
The President of the Federal Environment Agency in UK, Jochen Flasbarth understands that perfectly. He said that, “The presence of mercury is the downside to energy-saving lamps. We need a lamp technology that can prevent mercury pollution soon.”
