Strong earthquake strikes off Venezuela

PUERTO VABELLO, Venezuela (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck offshore Venezuela’s Aragua on Saturday evening, a spokesman for the United States Geological Survey told BNO News. No damage or casualties were reported.

The earthquake, which struck at 8.06 p.m. local time (20.06 UTC), had a preliminary magnitude of 6.4. It was initially reported as a 7.0 by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, but was quickly revised. The tremor was located about 6.2 miles deep, making it a shallow earthquake.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located about 63 miles west from the capital, Caracas, and about 23 miles north-northeast from Puerto Cabello. Shaking was reported in the capital, but there was no damage.

No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.
