Strong earthquake jolts eastern Taiwan

- HUA-LIEN, Taiwan (BNO NEWS) — A strong and shallow earthquake struck off eastern Taiwan on Tuesday morning, officials say. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The earthquake struck at 2.05 a.m. local time, about 40 miles east of Hua-lien on the eastern coast of Taiwan. The earthquake was initially reported to have a 6.4 magnitude but, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.3.
Witnesses reported the earthquake was felt as far away as T’ai-pei, which is located about 85 miles away. There was no immediate word on damage or casualties.
No tsunami warnings were issued following the earthquake.
