Strong earthquake hits off Sumatra

SUMATRA, Indonesia (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off southern Sumatra on Monday morning, officials said.

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1, according to the Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi Dan Geofisika, which is a local agency in Indonesia. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center put the magnitude at 6.2.

The quake struck about 40 miles deep at 6.10 a.m. local time (7.10 p.m. EDT Sunday), 87 miles from Bengkulu in Sumatra, Indonesia. No tsunami warnings were issued.

Strong earthquakes often hit Indonesia as it is in the so-called “Ring of Fire.”

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake.
