Strong earthquake hits off Panama; no casualties reported

- PANAMA CITY (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Panama on Saturday morning, officials told BNO News.
The earthquake, which struck at 1.49 a.m. local time (6.49 a.m. GMT), had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0, a spokesman for the United States Geological Survey said. It was initially reported as a 6.5 magnitude earthquake but it was quickly downgraded.
The epicenter of the quake was located about 68 miles northeast from Panama City in Panama and struck at a depth of 26.8 miles, making it a fairly deep earthquake. Shallow earthquakes are generally more likely to cause serious damage.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the area.
