TERNATE, Indonesia. (BNO NEWS) – A strong earthquake struck off the Maluku Islands in eastern Indonesia on Saturday morning, according to the country’s seismological agency.

The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.4, struck about 66 miles from Ternate. Ternate is an island and town in North Maluku Province, and has a population of about 60,000.

It’s epicenter was located about 60 miles deep, making it a fairly deep earthquake. Shallow earthquakes often tend to cause more damage, and increase the risk of a potential tsunami. However, no tsunami warning or watch was issued following the earthquake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported the earthquake as a magnitude 5.7 but magnitudes issued by local seismological agencies are regularly considered more accurate.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties following the tremor.
