Straying Sundarbans tiger mauls woman (Lead)

Kolkata, Feb 22 (IANS) A tiger strayed out of West Bengal’s Sundarbans and injured a housewife in a village Monday, forest department officials said.
The incident took place at Sonagna locality near Gosaba of South 24-Parganas district when an adult tiger strayed out of the Sudhannyakhali forest and entered the house of Kartik Das and Swapan Das.

“The tiger also injured a housewife Tarubala Mondal in the village. Later, the local people informed the nearest forest office. Our men went to the spot and successfully shot the tiger with a tranquiliser,” a senior state forest official told IANS.

“The tiger is now under medical observation and we have kept it inside a forest belt. A team, led by a veterinary expert, is constantly monitoring the animal,” he said.

According to sources, the tiger will be released again in the forest once the doctor gives the green signal.
