“The young pachyderm, named as Aranya by the forest department officials, died early Sunday,” a senior state forest department official said.
According to officials, the baby elephant, believed to be separated from its herd, was unfed and sick when it was first spotted near a riverside. Aranya was rescued by the wildlife workers from near Jaldhaka river in northern part of the state.
Veterinarians said the calf died of enteric disease and kidney problems.
The baby elephant was under the care of forest officials at Dhoopjhora in Jaldapara wildlife sanctuary with the help of two kunkis (trained elephants).
