Rivulets overflow in Haryana’s Yamunanagar, villages submerged
August 1st, 2010 - 12:53 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Aug 1 (IANS) Nearly 60 villages were inundated and hundreds of acres of agricultural land submerged in floodwaters in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district as rivulets flowed above the danger mark following heavy rains, officials said Sunday.
District officials said the flood situation was worrying in Chhachhruali and Bilaspur sub-division.
“Due to heavy rainfall the water is flowing above the danger mark in Som and Pathrala rivulets in Yamunanagar, posing a serious threat to nearby low-lying villages. But there is no need for panic and we are keeping a close tab on the situation,” Yamunanagar Deputy Commissioner Ashok Sanghwan told IANS.
Several parts of Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh were lashed by moderate to heavy rainfall Sunday morning. Met officials have predicted more rainfall in the region in the coming days.
The water level in the Yamuna river also touched an alarming level of over 90,000 cusecs Saturday, but Sanghwan said there was nothing to worry.
“We have observed that water level in Yamuna has substantially receded in the past few hours. It can cause floods only when it reaches over the 1.10 lakh cusecs mark. So far we have not decided to discharge floodwaters to neighbouring areas and are trying our best to control the situation,” he said.
Several districts including Ambala, Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Sirsa and Fatehabad were badly affected by floods in July. At least 26 people had lost their lives due to floods in different parts of Haryana.
