rapid-ice-meltSep 17, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Global warming is resulting in the melting of the ice and 2010 has been reported as the hottest of the 130 year record maintained by NASA. A study by the US scientists say that the arctic ocean ice melted at a rapid pace this year but did not shrink to the minimum area seen in 2007. Now the summer having passed the ice has entered its winter growth phase. Despite reports that the ice is melting rapidly every year and this year being a short melt season it seems that there is no immediate danger of complete disappearance of the arctic ice.

The 2040-2050 figure which has been quoted a lot is of concern. The issue of global warming has caused many problems as the ice melts and sea levels rise it results in land sliding in many places and many islands have been lost or are on the verge of being lost to the rising sea. The ice melting is posing several problems such as creating dangers for narwhal who are being threatened by the proliferation of giant ice flows and other changes taking place in the arctic area.

The melting of ocean ice is not dangerous but the melting of land is what is dangerous that makes the water level rise. If the whole of the ice sheet in the Greenland were to melt it would raise the water level by 22 feet. This year is of concern as ice melting was recorded to be at its third lowest level this summer. NASA confirmed the last 12 months being the most globally warm in a record keeping of 130 years.
