New Delhi, March 26 (IANS) A spell of heavy and unexpected showers abated in southern parts of the country Wednesday even as the northern parts continued with dry but pleasant weather. The maximum temperature in the national capital was around 33 degrees Celsius, continuing the region’s spell of pleasant weather as people brace themselves for the usual gruelling summers. The minimum temperature was 17 degrees Celsius, which was just one degree above normal for this time of the year.

The Met Office on its website said most parts of northwest and northern plains saw temperatures four to six degrees Celsius above normal. The maximum and minimum temperatures could rise by around 1-3 degrees in the next couple of days from Wednesday.

The heavy showers in the southern peninsula abated Wednesday even though the region may have seen rain in some parts. The weather office has forecast the rain would be subdued in the region for the next 3-4 days till Sunday.

The northeastern states received their share of rain with Guwahati getting 8.3 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

The following were the maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall in major cities for the 24 hours till Wednesday morning, with figures in brackets denoting deviations from the average.
