Perfect weather for Holi in north, rain in south India

New Delhi, March 22 (IANS) It was a picture perfect day for Holi revellers in north India Saturday as a warm and sunny day enabled boisterous celebrations. The national capital saw a day’s high 33 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal for this time of the year. Millions enjoyed splashing water on others and getting splashed in turn. The day’s low was a comfortable 17 degrees Celsius.

The weather department has forecast that the current weather trends in north India will continue till Monday. After that, the temperature may rise further.

Meanwhile, a low pressure trough over Cape Comorin and Lakshwadeep islands have led to heavy rain in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Heavy rain lashed Tamil Nadu for the third consecutive day Saturday leaving 207 villages flooded and nine people dead.

Unofficial sources put the toll at 15 and said thousands of acres of paddy and banana farms have been flooded.

The government said standing crops on 40,233 hectares have been damaged.

Most parts of Chennai and suburban areas were under water Saturday. According to the Met Office the city received 69.8 mm of rain.

Chief Minster M. Karunanidhi chaired an emergency meeting of ministers and senior officials Saturday and announced a Rs.1-billion relief package for the affected districts.

Since March 12, Puducherry and its suburbs have received 21 cm of rainfall, official sources said. The resort town recorded 5.2 cm of rain in the last 24 hours.

Thiruvananthapuram recorded 63.7 mm of rain and Hyderabad 26.2 mm.
