Panther falls into a well in MaharashtraFebruary 22nd, 2008 - 12:50 am ICT by admin
Pune, Feb 21 (IANS) A panther, which had come out of the jungle chasing a dog, fell into a well in Maharatsra, keeping the Nashik forest department on their toes for most of Thursday, a forest official said. “Early Thursday morning, a panther in an attempt to catch a dog came out of the forest and both the dog and the panther fell into a well in a nearby farm,” Ranjan Gaikwad, range forest officer (RFO), told IANS by telephone.
The owner of the farm, in Dubere village near Nashik, informed the forest department who deployed their squad to rescue the animals.
“The dog had already died in the well but the panther was still swimming,” said Gaikwad.
The rescue squad put a log in the well for the panther to rest on and barricaded the well, keeping a cage on the top to catch the panther.
But the animal jumped over the cage and ran into the nearby sugarcane fields taking everybody by surprise.
The forest department officials with villagers kept searching for the panther in the fields till late Thursday evening but could not spot it.
“In all likelihood it would have gone back into the jungle because panthers never stay at one place for a long time,” said Gaikwad.
