Shimla, Sep 10 (IANS) More than 140 people stranded in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul and Spiti district due to snowfall have been rescued, police said Thursday.
Superintendent of Police S.R. Rana said the people, including 22 foreigners, stuck at different locations around Sarchu in the district due to snowfall Wednesday evening were rescued.
“The Manali-Leh highway has been re-opened for the traffic as the snow-clearing operation was completed on the Rohtang Pass and the Baralacha Pass,” Rana told IANS by phone.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in middle and low hills during the past 48 hours wreaked havoc as landslides and uprooted trees brought traffic to a halt, causing inconvenience to thousands of tourists and local residents.
There has been no report of any major damage to private and public property in the state.
Traffic on the Chandigarh-Manali and Mandi-Pathankot national highways remained disrupted at various points due to landslides.
State capital Shimla received 59 mm of rainfall between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday.
Meteorological department director Manmohan Singh said the state experienced the season’s heaviest rain during the past 48 hours.
