One killed, 11 injured as police barrack roof collapses
January 16th, 2012 - 9:56 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Srinagar, Jan 16 (IANS) A policeman was killed and 11 others were injured when roof of a barrack at the commando training centre of the state armed police collapsed in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district Monday, police said.
“One constable was killed and 11 other trainees were wounded when the roof of a barrack inside the armed police commando training centre in Lethpora (Pulwama) collapsed today (Monday),” a senior police officer said here.
“The injured have been shifted to Srinagar city for treatment. Initial reports said the roof of the barrack collapsed because of the heavy snowfall in the area,” he added.
The valley has been reeling under moderate to heavy snowfall for the last two days which has closed the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
No flight could be operated from or to Srinagar international airport because of bad weather for the second day running Monday.
With both the road and air links remaining suspended for the past two days, the valley is at present cut off from the rest of the country.
Meanwhile, an acute shortage of cooking gas cylinders has added to the problems of the people here.
The state government has now sought the help of the Indian Air Force to bring cooking gas cylinders into the valley to ease the crisis.
