Gulf of Mexico, May 21, (THAINDIAN NEWS) BP released a statement on Thursday saying that it was still trying to collect the oil leaking from an oil rig near the Gulf of Mexico. While the statement comes at a time when the world can be assured about the fact that the company and the government are putting their best efforts to solve a serious problem, the videos of oil spilling into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico are really shocking. BP has said that it is now collecting almost 5000 barrels of oil in a day.
The fact that oil has been spilling for the past one month, and BP is still collecting almost 5000 barrels per day has given rise to strong criticism against the government. Many are of the opinion that the government had not taken the matter seriously from the beginning and that is why the oil has caused so much damage. While the oil spill has already demolished the coastal wetlands of Louisiana, it now endangers the Florida Keys.
The statement issued by BP on Thursday also pointed to the fact that not only oil but also close to 15 million cubic feet of natural gas is being obtained from the site of oil spill. The government officials notified that this figure was an important step in calculating the estimates because it would help them to calculate the exact cost that will be incurred to clean up the site and also to gauge the extent of environmental impact. Considering that the disaster has already killed 11 workers and is being declared as one of the worst accidents of the century, it is natural that the government pays attention to the matter.
