NOAA predicts active Hurricane Season in US
May 28th, 2010 - 12:32 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattMiami, May 27 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted that the United States should buckle up, as it is about to experience an active hurricane season. They said on Thursday, that there would be 14 to 23 tropical storms in the Atlantic basin. And out of these 14-23 tropical storms, at least 8 to 14 are expected to be hurricanes. They further added that out of these hurricanes, at least 3 to 7 hurricanes are expected to be of the Category 3 grade or even higher. It is also being expected that the high intensity hurricanes would have wind speed greater than 111 mph.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration added that they have made all these predictions, as the El Nino is weakening. It ought to be mentioned that El Nino is a Pacific Ocean phenomenon, which is responsible for creating strong wind shear, which in turn reduces the intensity of the Atlantic storms. According to reports, the Atlantic Hurricane season would last till the 30th of November.
“If this outlook holds true, this season could be one of the more active on record,” according to Jane Lubchenco, who is the under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator.
