No respite from heat despite hailstorm, mild showers (Second Lead)
April 19th, 2010 - 10:13 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 19 (IANS) Delhi Monday continued to reel under intense heat wave conditions - with the maximum temperature at 42.1 degrees Celsius, six notches above average - despite a brief hailstorm and rain in some areas. The heat wave is expected to continue, weather officials said.
“The maximum touched 42.1 degrees today (Monday). Although there were reports of mild precipitation and even hailstorm in some areas, the heat conditions haven’t been affected,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official told IANS.
“The rain was recorded at 1.8 mm in the Ridge area,” the official added.
After the mild hailstorm and showers which were reported mostly from central Delhi, humidity levels rose adding to the woes of residents already trying to cope with the stifling hot weather.
The humidity was in the range of 49-24 percent, the IMD official added.
“There was a hailstorm here this afternoon. It also rained for around 15 minutes. But when I stepped out, the heat was awful and the weather was sticky,” said Apurva, a bank executive as she stepped out of her Connaught Place office.
The minimum temperature Monday morning was 29.5 degrees Celsius, eight degrees above average.
On Sunday, Delhi recorded one of the season’s hottest days as the minimum temperature registered 30.6 degrees Celsius - 10 degrees above average - breaking a 40 year record. The maximum was 43 degrees Celsius.
