Mumbai, June 14 (IANS) With the onset of monsoon, Mumbai received over 20 mm of rainfall Monday that led to water clogging in various parts, with the weatherman forecasting more rain over the next few days.
Mumbai Monday registered average rainfall of 20.12 mm in the city and 24.5 mm in the suburbs, said officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

“The multi-layered clouds formed in the sky from the past two days will result in thundershowers throughout the city for the next few days,” said R.V. Sharma, deputy director-general, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai.

With most parts of the city including Dadar, Goregaon, Malad and Borivli already facing water logging issues, residents questioned as to what will happen in the days to come.

“This is just day one of proper rain. If the roads are water logged up to two feet, what is going to happen if it rains constantly,” questioned Khantil Shah, a resident of suburban Borivli.

A weather official from IMD Pune told IANS: “The monsoon moved slowly till Thursday. But it covered a good distance soon after. Thundershowers are likely to occur over Konkan and Goa over the next few days.”

Marathwada and Vidarbha will have to wait a bit longer for the rains. “It will still take two to three days for the rain to progress to these areas,” said the IMD official.

However, there were scattered instances of heavy rainfall in parts of Vidarbha and north Maharashtra in the last 24 hours.

The municipal commissioner of Mumbai has warned of heavy rain over the next few days, as has the weather department on the high tides in the Arabian Sea. “People are strongly advised against going near the beach during the high tide,” said an official from the met office.

Maharashtra has seen around 20 deaths in rains during the last 48 hours.
