Shimla, July 5 (IANS) The monsoon reached Himachal Pradesh Monday with the state experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day, the weatherman said.
While Shimla recorded 49.5 mm of rain, Kasauli recorded 73 mm, Dharamsala 27.8 mm, Nahan 105 mm, Dalhousie 65 mm and Solan 79.2 mm of rain.
“The monsoon, though much delayed, would strengthen in the next few days,” meteorological office director Manmohan Singh told IANS.
Last year, the monsoon hit the state June 30.
As per records of the Met office, in the past 30 years the monsoon arrived 24 times in June, which is normal.
“Six times the monsoon arrived late (in July). In 1982 it reached July 16. This year too it was late,” Singh said.
Meanwhile, the rains brought down the mercury across the state.
Shimla recorded a high of 19.9 degrees Celsius against Sunday’s 20.2 degrees Celsius.
Dharamsala saw a high of 30.6, while it was 30.4 degrees in Una town. These towns Sunday recorded day temperatures of 31.8 degrees and 32.8 degrees respectively.
Himachal Pradesh’s agriculture and horticulture economy is highly dependent upon rain as more than 80 percent of the area is rainfed.
