Ranchi, June 19 (IANS) Incessant monsoon showers since Wednesday have thrown life out of gear in many parts of Jharkhand.

“The depression formed over Bay of Bengal has shifted to Jharkhand and West Bengal. Due to it, heavy rainfall has been witnessed in some parts of the state. There could be some relief from Monday,” G.K. Mohanty, director of the Jharkhand Met Office told IANS Sunday.

The monsoon arrived in Jharkhand June 15. The state government was unprepared to deal with the heavy rainfall, with water gushing into many low lying areas of Ranchi, damaging many houses.

Ranchi has received 161 mm rainfall in the last four days, as of 8.30 a.m Sunday.

The worst sufferers in Ranchi are those who are were displaced during the demolition drive on the directive of the Jharkhand High Court.

Thousands of people have been rendered homeless by the demolition drive which started in March.

Their woes have compounded due to the heavy downpour. Rain water trickles down in their makeshift tents. Cold winds coupled with rains have reportedly claimed the lives of two infants living in tents.

“The state government made tall promises for us (displaced people). See the situation. We are leading a life worse than animals,” said Rewati Devi, living in a makeshift tent.

The maximum temperature recorded Saturday in Ranchi was 27 degrees Celsius, four notches below average.

Power cuts have also compounded the problems of the people. Ranchi has been witnessing 16 to 18 hours of power cuts since the last four days.
