Moderate quake hits northeast India, Bangladesh and Myanmar (Second Lead)
February 4th, 2011 - 11:25 pm ICT by IANSAgartala/Guwahati, Feb 4 (IANS) A 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked the entire northeast India and adjoining Myanmar and Bangladesh Friday evening, but no casualties were reported, officials said.According to meteorological department officials, the tremor occurred at around 7.24 p.m. in most parts of northeast region, neighbouring Myanmar and Bangladesh with its epicentre along the India-Myanmar border with Manipur.
No loss of life or property has been reported yet.
“Most parts of the northeast comprising eights states suffered a power cut during the tremble. However, power supply was restored within 30 to 40 minutes,” a power department official told IANS here.
The tremor was felt in many places of Assam.
“The apartment where we stay was literally swaying for close to about 20 seconds. We rushed out of our home in panic,” said Parveen Hussain, a housewife in Assam’s main city of Guwahati, about 500 km away from Imphal.
“There are no reports of any casualties or damage to properties in Manipur so far,” police official T. Singh said by telephone from the police control room in Imphal.
“It was indeed a very high intensity tremor with houses literally rocking and we could see people running out of their home and even in our office as well,” Pradip Phanjoubam, editor of the Imphal Free Press, a mass circulation English daily, said by telephone.
Friday’s quake was the second tremor since Tuesday, when a 3.8 quake hit some parts of northeast India and adjacent Bangladesh.
The Geological Survey of India had recently notified that mountainous region could experience a devastating earthquake as the region, according to seismologists, falls in the zone V, the sixth worst quake-prone belt in the world.
Assam experienced a massive tremor measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale Aug 15, 1950, that claimed some 1,500 lives.
The worst quake, measuring 8.7 was felt in the region in 1897. It killed 1,600 people.
