Moderate quake hits northeast India, Bangladesh and Myanmar (Lead, Changing dateline)
February 4th, 2011 - 10:38 pm ICT by IANSAgartala, Feb 4 (IANS) A 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked the entire northeast India and adjoining Myanmar and Bangladesh Friday evening, but no casualties were reported, officials here said.According to meteorological department officials, the tremor occurred at around 7.24 p.m. in most parts of northeast region, neighbouring Myanmar and Bangladesh with its epicentre along the India-Myanmar border with Manipur.
No loss of life or property has been reported yet.
“Most parts of the northeast comprising eights states suffered a power cut during the tremble. However, power supply was restored within 30 to 40 minutes,” a power department official told IANS here.
Friday’s quake was the second tremor since Tuesday, when a 3.8 quake hit some parts of northeast India and adjacent Bangladesh.
The Geological Survey of India had recently notified that mountainous region could experience a devastating earthquake as the region, according to seismologists, falls in the zone V, the sixth worst quake-prone belt in the world.
Assam experienced a massive tremor measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale Aug 15, 1950, that claimed some 1,500 lives.
The worst quake, measuring 8.7 was felt in the region in 1897. It killed 1,600 people.
