Mercury up in Himachal, more snow in store
January 22nd, 2012 - 2:08 pm ICT by IANSShimla, Jan 22 (IANS) The minimum temperature in Himachal Pradesh rose marginally Sunday as there was no major snow or rain in the past 24 hours, the Met office said.
Due to cloudy conditions, the minimum temperatures across the state increased by two to three degrees, a weatherman said.
Shimla saw a low of 2.6 degrees Celsius, a rise from Saturday’s minus 1.2 degrees.
Kalpa in Kinnaur district saw the night temperature at minus 4.5 degrees, Manali registered minus 2 degrees and Dharamsala 2.7 degrees.
These towns Saturday saw the night temperature at minus 9.6 degrees, minus 6.6 degrees and 1.2 degrees respectively.
A fresh bout of western disturbance will remain active in the state till Jan 26, said the weather office.
Meanwhile, the national highway-22, which was closed for traffic for more than a week due to snowfall in upper Shimla, has been re-opened for heavy vehicles, said a government spokesperson.
He has advised locals and tourists not to venture out in the high hills of Shimla, Kullu, Sirmaur, Chamba and Kinnaur districts as chances of heavy snow and avalanches are high.
Even the snow-bound areas near the tourist resort of Manali like Solang, Beas Kund, Nehru Kund, Gulaba and Marhi have been declared avalanche-prone.
