Mercury touches 42 degrees in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, May 3 (IANS) Several parts of Orissa reeled under a heat wave Tuesday, with mercury rising to 42 degrees Celsius - the day’s highest in the state - at Titilagarh town of Bolangir district, an official said.

The district headquarter town of Bolangir, some 330 km from here, remained the second hottest place in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 41.4 degrees Celsius, a senior official of the Bhubaneswar meteorological office told IANS.

While four other towns - Sonepur, Sambalpur, Hirakud and Jharsuguda - recorded temperatures of over 40 degrees, at least two places, Sundergarh and Malkangiri, recorded temperatures of over 39 degrees Celsius, he said.

The coastal towns of Puri, Gopalpur and Paradip remained cool, with maximum temperature at 33.9, 32.5, and 32.3 degree Celsius respectively.

State capital Bhubaneswar saw the mercury rising to 38.6 degrees Celsius.
