Magnitude 4.9 quake shakes Indonesia
August 22nd, 2008 - 1:30 pm ICT by Bupha RavirotA moderate earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale shook Minahasa ans Sulawesi area of Indonesia at 21:30:48 UTC,Thursday, August 21 ( 05:30:48 AM local time) reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. There are no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The quake struck at about 0.244°S, 119.745°E with a depth of 53.2 km. The epicenter is 75 km N from Palu of Sulawesi, 340 km ENE from Balikpapan of Kalimantan, 545 km N from Ujung Pandang of Sulawesi and 1575 km ENE from JAKARTA , Java.
Indonesia’s location on the edges of the Pacific, Eurasian, and Australian tectonic plates makes it the site of numerous volcanoes and frequent earthquakes. Recent disasters due to seismic activity include the 2004 tsunami that killed an estimated 167,736 in northern Sumatra, and the Yogyakarta earthquake in 2006 measured 6.3 Richter.
