Louisiana’s territorial seas re-open to recreational and commercial fishing
May 25th, 2010 - 6:39 am ICT by BNO NewsBATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA (BNO NEWS) – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) re-opened to recreational and commercial fishing activities portions of the territorial seas south of Marsh Island in Iberia and Vermilion parishes effective immediately, LDWF Secretary Robert Barham announced on Monday.
The area was originally closed on May 18 due to a confirmed report of oil on a small section of the southern shoreline. No additional oil has been spotted or reported from the area.
After the oil report was received, the LDWF launched a field survey and immediate seafood testing in the suspected areas. The agency decided to close some areas with the intent to have the area as safe as possible and not closing any fishing areas unnecessarily. Test results showed that the area was clean and the waters were then reopened.
All other closures remain in place.
