Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh), March 25 (IANS) A leopard was killed by a group of villagers in Uttar Pradesh Friday after it mauled at least 11 people, including a forest official.

The leopard, believed to be around 5 years old, strayed into Lachaikheda village and started attacking the locals.

Later, armed with wooden sticks and stones, the villagers killed the animal.

“The condition of five people, including the forest official, is stated to be serious. All the injured are being treated at a hospital,” Divisional Forest Officer K.K. Pandey told reporters in Rae Bareli, some 80 km from Lucknow.

According to him, the leopard strayed into the village in the morning and charged at the locals. A team of officials and the police rushed to the village.

After hiding for some time in the sugarcane fields, the animal attacked the villagers again, including a woman. The people then launched their counter-attack and killed the leopard

Officials believe the leopard must have strayed from Fatehpur or Banda forest area as Rae Bareli does not have any sizeable forest.
