Mamata Banerjee Kolkata, May 28 (IANS) The route of the east-west Kolkata Metro project could be changed to save the city’s greenery, Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandopadhyay said Saturday.

Speaking after a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bandopadhyay said: “She (Banerjee) urged the union urban development ministry to ensure that greenery of Subhash Sarovar is saved. If required, the east-west Metro rail will not go through the lake. If necessary, there will be a change in the route.”

The east-west Metro project is a 50:50 joint venture between the central and West Bengal governments. It is scheduled to be commissioned in 2014.

In the first phase of the project, the east-west Metro will go up to Subhash Sarovar near Beliaghata from Salt Lake in the city.

“I will urge the centre to declare Subhash Sarovar as a national lake in the next session of parliament,” said the Trinamool MP.
