Kiwi rescuers free baby seal entangled in a thong
September 6th, 2012 - 7:10 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Sep 6 (IANS) A seal pup in New Zealand had a lucky escape after getting entangled in a thong which rescuers found wrapped around its neck.
The creature was swimming in the sea off New Zealand beauty spot Lover’s Leap when it was spotted wrapped up in the bright red undies. A passer-by noticed the struggling seal and called the Department of Conservation, The Sun reported.
A group of rescuers quickly reached the scene and following an hour’s hike up a 853ft cliff side, the team found the helpless animal and started to free it.
It was surprising for them too to find that the seal was struggling not due to the usual plastic bags or fishing nets but a pair of saucy panties.
The pup finally escaped unharmed and was soon back playing with its pals.
Rescuers believe that the knickers were ditched by a walker thought to have had a liaison at the rendezvous spot.
With little chance of tracing the rightful owner, the Department of Conservation framed the undies and put them up for online auction.
The skimpy undies eventually were sold for around 70 pounds and the money was donated to a charity.
