Kentucky awards a combined $530,000 for alternative fuels and renewable energy technologies
March 2nd, 2010 - 3:26 am ICT by BNO NewsSOMERSET, KENTUCKY (BNO NEWS) – Two Kentucky companies were awarded a combined $580,000 in funding from the Kentucky New Energy Ventures Fund to develop alternative fuels and renewable energy technologies, Governor Steve Beshear announced on Monday.
Wellhead Energy Systems, located in Somerset, obtained an investment of $550,000 to develop generator systems that can be placed near natural gas wells to produce electricity for rural communities. Wellhead Energy Systems’ technology can take natural gas from these isolated wells, clean it, compress it and feed it into a self-contained, on-site generator system.
Southeast Biofuels, in Mt. Sterling, were awarded $30,000 to develop a portable system that can produce ethanol using sorghum as a feedstock. The modular fermentation system will produce the liquid fuel at sites where the sorghum feed stock is grown and harvested. Sweet sorghum is similar to corn and grows well in Kentucky, even on marginal lands.
To this day, the Kentucky New Energy Ventures Fund has made 25 awards for a total of $2.85 million. The companies that received these awards are developing alternative and renewable energy technologies based on clean coal, solar, wind, or biofuel.
