India signs Nagoya Protocol on genetic resources

United Nations, May 12 (IANS) India has signed the landmark Nagoya Protocol linking conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity with development.

The Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilisation was signed here Wednesday by India’s Environment and Forests Secretary T. Chatterjee.

Adopted Oct 29, 2010 in Nagoya, Japan, the protocol has been signed by 23 countries so far.

Chatterjee noted that India has “adopted several measures and public policies that give priority to the sustainable use of biodiversity and the services that it provides as essential elements of human well-being”.
