India needs roadmap for cleaner fuels: Pachauri
June 15th, 2011 - 10:55 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 15 (IANS) India urgently needs a roadmap for introducing cleaner fuels to reduce vehicular emissions, the major source of air pollution, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) director general R.K. Pachauri said Wednesday.
“India urgently needs to have a roadmap for introduction of cleaner fuels, given the rapid growth in the urban areas and vehicles. Though the government of India has taken initiatives in this direction, a lot needs to be done to ensure that we soon have a plan of action to address air pollution in Indian cities,” Pachauri said.
TERI concluded a policy workshop here Wednesday which discussed the costs, benefits, issues and concerns related to cleaner liquid fuels in India.
The workshop was organised in coordination with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and the ministry of petroleum and natural gas.
Expressing concern over the issue, Planning Commission member B.K. Chaturvedi said: “Given our commitments in Copenhagen and Cancun, we need to move towards cleaner fuel and cleaner vehicles. In 2012, we are insisting for a road map so that by certain dates, we are able to achieve Euro 6 standards.”
India produces about 14.82 million vehicles annually.
