Hurricane Jimena Threatens Baja California Peninsula

stormThe fast approaching Hurricane Jimena is considered to be posing a major threat to the Pacific coastline of Mexico. According to the forecasting department, the hurricane has already strengthened in to a Category 4 storm. The hurricane has already flooded the Mexican coast with its torrential downpour, in most part of the later half of the week.

It is being rated to be as extremely dangerous now, as slowly meanders its way up along the north-east, moving parallel to the coastline. On the afternoon of Sunday, the hurricane had recorded a maximum of up to nearly 140 mph (220 kmh) sustained winds.

According to expert statistics, it is being touted to head for the Mexican Baja Peninsula around late Monday or early Tuesday. The Miami based National Hurricane Center’s Richard Pasch said that till now it is quite difficult to exactly state the extent of the strength the hurricane may assume, upon reaching the peninsula. He added, “I think it’s going to be a substantial hurricane by the time it approaches.”

Another hurricane specialist at the Miami Center, Dave Roberts said, “There’s a good chance this system could be a Category 5 in the next 24 hours.” The hurricane Jimena is the 10th storm of the Pacific season. On Sunday, Jimena was recorded to be located at about 270 miles (440 km) south of Cabo Correintes in Mexico and around 480 miles (770 km) south-southeast of the southern most tip of the Baja California.

It has been reported, that on Sunday, authorities in the coastal town of Cabo Corrientes, had embarked on setting up shelters, in preparation of the storm’s advance and threat.
