October 29th, 2009 - 3:55 am ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt Tell a Friend -

Colorado, Oct 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Denver has been struck by a huge snowstorm that has paralyzed normal life in that region. Holiday travelers had to cancel their tickets and prolong their stay in Denver by some more days as normal life along with flights were completely disrupted.

Blizzard conditions and up to 18 inches of snow were forecast in some areas, and the situation could worsen further. Up to 18 inches of snow was forecast in northern Colorado Front Range. As much as 4 feet was possible in the Colorado mountains. Cheyenne was expected to get at least 14 inches before the storm moves off Thursday afternoon.

The region’s first heavy snow of autumn prompted government officials to close schools in Wyoming and was blamed for dozens of accidents in the state and in neighboring Colorado.

70 accidents were reported in Wyoming. They happened on Interstate 80 before the Wyoming Department of Transportation closed the highway between Cheyenne and Laramie early Wednesday. Nine major accident crashes caused injuries but no causalities were reported yet so far.

“People are just not slowing down enough,” department spokesman Bruce Burrows said.

Police in the Denver suburb of Broomfield successfully rescued nearly some 100 people who had been stranded in cars along U.S. 36, the main route between Denver and Boulder.
