Himachal slightly warmer but rain, snow expected (Lead)

Manmohan Singh Shimla, Jan 11 (IANS) The hills of Himachal Pradesh Tuesday saw a marginal rise in the temperatures due to long sunny days, but the Met Office here forecast chances of rain and more snowfall in the next three days.”There are chances of more rainfall and snowfall in the state from Jan 12 to 14,” Meteorological Office director Manmohan Singh told IANS.

He said the western disturbances - storm systems originating from Caspian Sea and moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan region - would be active again in the region.

Most of the prominent tourist towns like Shimla, Narkanda, Kufri, Manali and Dalhousie, located in mid-hills, may witness moderate snowfall after Thursday, he said.

Shimla already received the season’s first snowfall on New Year’s eve. It was for the first time in eight years that the town experienced snowfall on the last day of the year.

The town received around four inches of snowfall.

Another picturesque town Manali, some 250 km from Shimla, experienced a mild spell of snow Sunday.

It too saw good spells of snow in the last two days of 2010.

Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest place in the state Tuesday with a low of minus 13.9 degrees against Monday’s minus 15.4 degrees.

Shimla recorded the minimum temperature at 4.8 degrees, whereas the maximum was 14.6 degrees. It saw a low of 3.6 degrees Monday.

Kalpa in Kinnaur district recorded a low of minus 4.8 degrees, while it was 0.4 degree at Bhuntar and 3.3 degrees at Dharamsala, which is the seat of the Tibetans’ government-in-exile and where the Dalai Lama lives when in India.

The towns Monday recorded the night temperatures at minus 4.9 degrees, minus 0.5 degrees and 3.1 degrees Celsius respectively.
